Pregnancy Massage: How to Find the Right Therapist

When you look for a good prenatal/pregnancy massage, I recommend staying away from spas! This is not to discredit spa massages, but in most cases the staff at these places are not certified, and if they are it’s usually from an online certification course. To me, that’s just not good enough, especially when you’re working with pregnant clients. So, two good questions to ask are where the Therapist got their certification and whether the majority of their clients are pregnant.

The most common complaint from my clients who have received spa massages during their pregnancy is that the massage wasn’t any good, and that the Therapist hardly even touched them. I always say that this was probably because they were afraid to touch them!

When you google the Certified Prenatal Therapists in your area, seek out someone who specializes in prenatal – they are usually more experienced and educated on how to work with pregnant clients. Many prenatal therapists are also Certified Labor Support Doulas to me, this is an added bonus.

Consider finding a prenatal yoga class, which is something you should absolutely be doing during your pregnancy. It’s a great way to bond with other preggos! Plus they all talk about me, and about how fabulous they feel after a good massage. Word of mouth keeps me very busy.

If there is a birthing center in your area, this would be another good source for a referral. I believe that most centers offer prenatal massages, and I would choose this over a spa massage any day.
If your OB office doesn’t have a recommendation for a Certified Therapist, try calling other offices in your area. Here in Ft. Lauderdale, I’m in touch with three different OB offices that recommend my services.

When performed correctly, prenatal massages offer so many good benefits for both Mom and Baby. Every preggo deserves a few good prenatal massages during her pregnancy!

I do know that prenatal massages can be costly, so if you find a therapist whose massage you enjoy, get your family and friends involved and start a prenatal massage fund for yourself. Have everyone in your circle donate $10 a week (or month) to support your much-needed monthly prenatal massages.

Everyone wants to do something nice for a preggo, and there is nothing better than giving the gift of a good prenatal massage! Did I mention that prenatal massages also help balance out your hormones? Even if that were the only benefit, it would still be worth it!
